SALAMMBÔ — THE MUSICAL ARCHIVES

“I am going to write a novel set three centuries before Christ, for I feel the need to escape the modern world in which my pen has been too deeply immersed and which, moreover, wearies me as much to portray as it disgusts me to behold.”

— Gustave Flaubert

Salammbô — The Musical Archives – the company in Lyon in 2000

SALAMMBÔ ARCHIVES · LYON 2000

A creation, a company, an artistic adventure.

In 2000, Salammbô came to life on stage in Lyon. Nearly thirty performers took part in this first production, bringing together music, song, dance and theatre. Performed notably at Le Radiant and La Bourse du Travail in Lyon, the show found its audience before entering a long hiatus.

These images, photographs and recordings are the traces of that adventure: a production built collectively, a universe still taking shape, and a story that continues today through those who lived it, heard it or discovered it.

THE 2000 ALBUM

Music as the first memory of the production.

The Lyon production also left behind a musical legacy through the Salammbô album. Its songs, voices and arrangements bear witness to the sound of the production as it originally existed.

More than a simple archival document, this recording preserves something of the energy of the original company and still allows us today to rediscover the musical colours that accompanied the birth of the work.

These photographs also tell the story of what the stage does not reveal: the rehearsals, the encounters, the bonds that were formed and the shared memories of an adventure lived together.
